Teens and senior citizens recently enjoyed an afternoon of mystery, capped off with crowns!

This year’s Adopt-a-Grandparent program at the Methuen Senior Center wrapped up last month with a Senior Prom featuring the theme “Masquerade Ball.”

The Methuen High participants joined their “adopted grandparents” for an afternoon of dancing and dinner, provided through funds raised from raffles. Several students came dressed in their best prom attire, while the seniors were dolled up in suits and fancy dresses.

Two elder Prom Kings and Queens were chosen: David Kirkpatrick and Carol Cassista and John Janowski and Helen McGrath.
Four graduating Methuen High students – Elijah Putnam, Audrie Andino, Marley Rocha and Kelly Lutz – were each presented with certificates for their four years of participating in the program and a cord to wear over their graduation gown. The cords were hand-made by math teacher Julia Lavoie, who crafted a total of seven for the students. Unable to attend the prom, but also receiving certificates and cords, were Kiana Savage, Khloe Goggin and Sabiel Sanchez.

Methuen High faculty adviser Jeff Bellistri has been running the program, which started 23 years ago, with Senior Center Director Susan Riccio. This year, 34 students were enrolled and typically 25 attend the program every Wednesday after school from 2:30-4pm. Students and their “grandparents” have a wonderful time telling each other stories, playing games and much more. They also hold a fashion show with items they find at the center’s thrift shop.
