A former Methuen resident is ensuring that students from the Methuen Arlington Neighborhood community receive the education they need to change the world. Robert Sanguedolce, an entrepreneur who now resides in California, created a scholarship to honor his late mother, Rita, a well-known Methuen educator for nearly 30 years. The scholarship supports students who are already enrolled in college.

The recipients include future engineers, healthcare professionals and a psychologist. Four of the students are in four-year programs, while the fifth is studying at a community college.

“This really helps take the financial burden off me and my mom,” said Jenny Nguyen, a junior nursing student. “I am so grateful.”

Jennysha Martinez, a college junior who works full-time while pursuing a degree in psychology, said the support allows her to focus more on her studies. Her goal is to work with people facing mental-health and addiction issues.

Iverson Rodriguez, an engineering major, plans to work on affordable solutions to environmental problems, particularly water management.

“This will help me reach that,” he said of the award.

This year’s other recipients are Rhaelyn Gutierrez and Darianna de la Cruz.

“These are hard-working, committed students who will make a difference,” said Linda Soucy, founder and director of MAN Inc.

All of the students have been part of MAN Inc., working with younger members of the neighborhood, serving as homework helpers and summer program counselors.

“Their parents sacrifice to support them. To have someone like Bob, who sees the potential in our kids and recognizes their work, that is amazing. We are so blessed,” Soucy said.

MAN Inc., hosts a homework center, summer youth programs, various community events, and supports neighbors to help them become more informed and successful members of the community.
