After 51 years of dedicated service to the Methuen Department of Public Works, William “Bill” McEvoy is officially retiring.
Bill started with the DPW on June 5, 1974 working his first two years doing trash pickups. After that, he was asked if he wanted to work in the office as the Time and Construction Clerk overseeing timecards and attendance as well as working on several projects including FEMA projects the city was involved in. Bill was also in charge of the snow contractors, billing, etc.
He said of his office job, “It was much better than being outside working in the snow.”
His most memorable on-the-job experience was during the days-long Blizzard of 1978: “We went home, slept a few hours and came right back to take care of the guys’ time and the contractors. … I’ve had a good run.”
Assistant Time and Construction Clerk Stephanie Ferrier said, “Until they find someone to replace Bill, I have big shoes to fill. He is very smart, very dedicated and very loyal.”
Deputy DPW Director Felix Garcia said, “Bill always shows up with a smile, he always gives 100% of everything he does.”
Mayor DJ Beauregard presented Bill with a citation from the city for his many years of dedicated service.
