Nevins Library welcomes you to continue celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with a few more programs in October. Join us Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6pm for a special screening of the film “The Seltzer Factory.” A discussion with the writer/director Paloma Valenzuela follows this screening. On Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2pm, join us for an interactive workshop called “Rhythms of the Tropics: Exploring Afro-Caribbean Percussion.” This event is great for anyone age 8 to 100! Also, on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 6:30pm, join us for “Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home,” a powerful panel discussion featuring poets and activists who have contributed to social justice movements across Massachusetts. Let’s talk about Methuen’s Internet
Are you tired of unreliable internet? Worried about scams or phishing? Let’s talk about computers, internet and computer classes in Methuen! Join us Monday, Oct. 21 at 6:30pm for a community meeting to share your experiences, challenges and ideas about these important topics. Let’s work together to develop some solutions to help everyone have equal access to technology, the internet, and the classes to help use them all well and safely. This meeting is facilitated by VHB, on behalf of the Massachusetts Broadband Institute.

Literacy Tutor Training begins
We have an exciting opportunity for you to make a real difference in our community. We’re in need of volunteers who are fluent in English, hold a high school diploma and are interested in other cultures. As a volunteer, you’ll work one-on-one with adults learning English, offering them the personalized support they need to thrive. Our new tutor training starts Wednesday, Oct. 16. Friends of the Library news
The next Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Library will be Monday, Oct. 7 at 6pm. At this meeting, the Friends will be honoring two dedicated board members: Peg Doyle and Elaine Ferris. They have given so many hours to the Friends group, and we thank them for their generosity. While they will still stay active as members, the Friends will announce the two new officers at this meeting. Interested in joining the Friends and supporting the library? Please stop by the meeting and see what it’s all about!
Yummy Friends’ fund-raisers
Don’t worry about cooking Monday, Oct. 21! Instead, support the Friends at The Irish Cottage! Bring a flyer to the Irish Cottage and let your server know you’re supporting the Friends of the Library, and a portion of your bill will be donated to support the library! The Friends thanks the Irish Cottage for their support. Also, coming in October – a Krispy Kreme fund-raiser! Look for more information at the Main Desk.
Board and Brewed
If you are in your 20s and 30s and you love coffee, tea and games, come to Board and Brewed! Board and Brewed will happen Saturday, Oct. 19 at 11am. The library will provide coffee and tea, you provide the games. Come ready to meet people and have fun! There are no sign-ups for this program. Just drop in.
Teen Clubs
Our clubs for teens are in full swing, but that doesn’t mean you can join in the fun! Come to watch and discuss your favorite anime, draw manga or just hang out at Teen Anime Club meet on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 4pm. Create your own art or take home a craft and express your creative side at the Teen Arts and Crafts Club on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 3pm. Our first Teen Gaming Club will be Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7pm. Come learn some new board and card games, or play a familiar favorite! The Nintendo Switch will also be available to play. And finally, Teen Movie Club will meet Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 4pm. Come to watch and talk about movies. Club members will get to choose the movie during the meeting!
Youth Services Dept. news
We’re settling into our school-year routine now, enjoying our variety of storytimes, book groups and programs for kids of all ages, but we also have some special programs to offer this month. First and foremost, we are so excited to welcome award-winning author and illustrator Raúl the Third to the library for a special appearance! Known for his Vamos! picture books, El Toro & Friends early readers, Coco Rocho board books and his illustrations for Stuntboy and the Lowrider series, Raúl the Third is an incredibly versatile talent who enjoys sharing ideas with kids. Please join us as he talks about his books, how he works, what he reads and more!
Other special events this month include an offsite bilingual program at the Methuen Music Hall, where stories by Mo Willems will be read aloud and set to music – sure to be an innovative way to enjoy Willems’ popular work! And we’ll be offering another entertaining bilingual event, as well, when storytellers Esther Gomez and Karina Liendo return to the library with a sweet story, “I Remember Abuelito,” in honor of the Day of the Dead holiday. Last but not least, you won’t want to miss our “Rhythms of the Tropics” workshop for ages 8 and up, a hands-on exploration of the rich percussion heritage of Afro-Caribbean music.
October brings special Halloween programs as well! Once again this year we’ll have a “Haunted Woods” event, where kids can take a tour through our spooky woods and enjoy Halloween games and crafts. (Some parts of the program will be scarier than others, for kids who enjoy different levels of spookiness.) And your littlest ones won’t want to miss our annual “Halloween Happenings” program – dress up your kids in their costumes, and bring them to the library for Halloween stories and trick-or-treating throughout the building!
Parents also get a special event this month: a workshop on identifying and coping with children’s anxiety (for parents of children 2-12). Led by Ashley Abesamra, a licensed mental health clinician, this discussion will help parents acquire tools to help them navigate these challenges with their child.
Keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and Facebook page to check the dates for these programs and to learn the latest about upcoming programs, fund=raisers and special events – there’s always something interesting going on!
