Start a new chapter: Join a book group!

September means that our book groups are back from the summer break, ready with new lists of books to read and discuss! If you’ve ever been curious about joining one of our book groups, now is a great time to join (though every group will always welcome new members). It’s a fun way to meet new people and talk about books!
Let’s see if any of these groups fit your interest and schedule:
Noche de Libros, Tertulia y Café: Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 7pm. Club de Libros en Español.
Thursday Night Discussion Group: Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7pm. We will be talking about the books we read this summer.
WORDS Book Group: Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7pm. We will be discussing “Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law” by Haben Girma.
LGBTQ+ Book Group: Thursday, Sept 10 at 6:30pm. We will be discussing the movie “Moonlight.”
Stranger Than Fiction Book Group: Monday, Sept. 14 at 6:30pm. We will be discussing the nonfiction books we read this summer.
Wednesday Afternoon Book Group: Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 1pm. We will be discussing the books we read over the summer.
Book Babble – the book group just for teens: Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 3pm. We will be talking about the books we read this summer. Make sure to let Miss Alison know if you’d like Book Babble books automatically put on hold for you each month!

Coffeehouse with
Methuen’s Cosgrove

Join us Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1pm for an amazing concert from Methuen’s own Ben Cosgrove! Ben is a traveling composer-performer whose music explores the themes of landscape, place and environment. Described by the Boston Globe as a “sonic plein-air painter who uses his piano as a paintbrush,” Ben has performed in every U.S. state except for Delaware, collaborated with groups ranging from rock bands to research scientists, and contributed music to several radio and film projects – including the Ken Burns documentary “The American Buffalo.”

Transitions

Join us Thursday, Sept. 17 at 6pm to hear from Jenna Elliot, the founder of Naked Flower Professional Organizers, as she helps us learn new ways to tackle clutter! End-of-Life
Planning Workshop

Planning ahead is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can offer your loved ones. Join us Thursday, Sept. 24 at 6:30pm as Sarah Gladstone, Death Doula and End-of-Life Planner, guides us through the basic steps of documenting your wishes and understanding your options. If you’re planning for yourself or supporting a family member, this workshop will provide practical tools and a compassionate space to get started. Caregiver
support

Learn about the Family Caregiver Support Program on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 6:30pm. This program provides information and referrals, solutions and services to supports a caregiver’s efforts, whether caring for someone at home, in assisted living or in a skilled nursing facility. The professionally trained staff have personal experience with the rewards and challenges of being a caregiver, understanding the complexity of managing someone’s needs at home and the impact of these responsibilities on family dynamics. It’s Book Sale
time!

September also means it’s time for the Friends of the Library’s Fall Book Sale! The Friends have been collecting and sorting lots of books, puzzles, CDs, DVDs and games to be ready for this sale! Preview night will be Friday, Sept. 25 from 5-8pm. This event is free for all Friends of the Library; it is $20 admission for all others.
The sale continues on Saturday, Sept. 26 (9am-5pm) and Sunday, Sept. 27 (noon-4pm). Monday, Sept. 28 is Bargain Day (9am-8pm) where you can stuff a bag as full as you can for only $10 a bag!
This is the Friends’ biggest fund-raiser of the year and helps support all they do for the library, including purchasing museum passes and sponsoring library programming. See you there!

Library hours

Please be aware that the library will be closed Saturday, Sept. 5 and Monday, Sept. 7 for the Labor Day holiday.
Also, it’s time to return to our regular Saturday hours! Starting Saturday, Sept. 12, we will be open 9am-5pm on Saturdays.

From Youth Services

The Youth Services Department had a great time enjoying summer programs with our young patrons –not to mention seeing how much reading kids did reading over the summer! Thank you to all the children, teens, families and caretakers who joined us for so many wonderful programs and events.
Now it’s time to start up our school-year programming, and you’ll see some old favorites return in September; in general, though, we’ll keep our programming a little lighter than usual this month as families get themselves into the school-year groove. Family Storytime returns (ages 3-8) returns, as well as DIY Designs (ages 10-13) and Book Babble (ages 12-18); we’ll also introduce a new Writing Club (ages 8-12) and hold a special “You Belong Here” Storytime (ages 3-8). And of course we’ll have a number of programs for our youngest patrons, as well as our LEGO and Pokemon, programs and our

This month we’re also launching another season of our popular 26-week “Alphabits” program series for ages 3-5: each week’s session will focus on a different letter, and even if your children already know the alphabet they’ll enjoy the stories, crafts and company of other preschool children. Keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and Facebook page to learn the latest about all of our upcoming programs, fund-raisers, and special events – there’s always something interesting going on!
