There are a couple of changes to the library’s hours this month. First, the library will be closed Saturday, Aug. 30 and Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day. Then, beginning Saturday, Sept. 6, we will return to regular Saturday hours: 9am-5pm.

New season
for book groups

September starts a new season for our book groups! If you’ve ever been curious about joining a book group, now is a great time to check one out. Each is a little different, but all invite thoughtful and respectful conversation about the books we read together. Here are all the meeting dates for our book groups for adults in September, and more information can be found on our website or by calling (978) 686-4080.

• Thursday, Sept. 4, 7pm: Thursday Night Book Group.
• Monday, Sept. 8, 7pm: Stranger than Fiction Book Group.

• Thursday, Sept. 11, 6:30pm: LGBTQ+ Book Group.
• Wednesday, Sept. 17, 1pm: Wednesday Afternoon Book Group.

Author event:
Jane Healey

The author Jane Healey will be returning to Nevins Library on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7pm to discuss her latest book “The Women of Arlington Hall.” This latest historical fiction novel is about a female codebreaker who puts her future and her heart on the line in a stirring novel about love, loyalty, betrayal and Cold War spy games. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signed by the author. Planning for Medicare

Are you approaching the age of Medicare eligibility? Join us for a presentation and discussion Thursday, Sept. 25 at 6pm with Heather Hurd, a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts representative. She’ll give an explanation of Medicare, talk about the Medicare enrollment timeline, Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans, and more. The 4th Foot Kings
Own Regiment

The Redcoats are coming! Meet the 4th Foot Kings Own Regiment as they set up camp on the front lawn of the library Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10am to 2pm. Learn how they prepare for living in the wilderness and protecting those within the colony. This event is great for families, and no registration is required!

Book Sale

The Friends of the Nevins Library welcomes everyone to our 2025 Fall Book Sale. Preview Night is Friday, Sept. 26 between 5 and 8pm where entrance is $20 per person – unless you are a member of the Friends! The sale opens to the public Saturday, Sept. 27 from 9am-5pm and Sunday, Sept. 28 from noon -4pm. Monday, Sept. 29 is Bargain Day: Purchase a bag for $10, and fill it up between 9am and 8pm. Then Tuesday, Sept. 30 is Teacher Day- when any teacher in the area is welcome to take books for their classroom. The Book Sale is our big fund-raiser and all proceeds go to supporting library programs and museum passes.
Want to volunteer at for the Book Sale? The Friends of the Library are looking for volunteers to help set up our sale. If you are a student and need some community service hours, this is a perfect time to earn a letter for your hours. Please send your name and contact information to Sarah Sullivan, ssullivan@nevinslibrary.org and we will get in touch with you to fill in some hours. We appreciate all your help.

For teens

The after-school programs for teens are up and running again, at NEW dates and times. Most of the programs will resume in October. Be sure to check the calendar of events to learn about all the new dates and times, and to register for programs.
Book Babble will start up again in September! The first Book Babble meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 3 from 4-5:30 pm in the Study Room. This month we’ll doing a Reader’s Roundup! Please join us as we check in with each other and recap what we’ve read since we last met!

Board and Brewed

If you like board games, coffee or tea, come to Board and Brewed. The next Board and Brewed meetup is Saturday, Sept. 13, from 11am-1pm in the Study Room. Come for the coffee or tea, stay for the games! Bring your own board game or borrow one of the library’s games for this meetup for new adults. Since the library does have a limited selection of games, bringing your own board game to teach is highly encouraged. If you choose to borrow a game, you must do so with your library card. No registration is required for this event.

From the Children’s Room

The Youth Services Department had a great time enjoying summer programs with our young patrons – not to mention stamping the fun “game boards” to record kids’ reading over the summer! Thank you to all the children, teens, families and caretakers who joined us for so many wonderful programs and events.
Now it’s time to start up our school-year programming, and you’ll see some old favorites return in September, plus some ongoing standards and a few new programs; in general, though, we’ll keep our programming a little lighter than usual this month as families get themselves into the school-year groove. Imagine That (ages 2-5) returns, as well as Homeschool Hub (ages 7-11) and Book Babble (ages 12-18); we’ll also introduce Tales for Toddlers (ages 2-3), Artful Afternoon (all ages) and Slime of the Month (ages 9-11). And of course we’ll have our usual array of storytime, history and preschool programs – plus Murphy the Dog, who will enjoy hearing your kids read aloud to him throughout the fall.
Looking ahead, in October we’ll once again offer our popular 26-week Alphabits program series for ages 3-5: each week’s session will focus on a different letter, and even if your children already know the alphabet they’ll enjoy the stories, crafts and company of other preschool children. Keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and Facebook page to learn the latest about all of our upcoming programs, fund-raisers and special events – there’s always something interesting going on!
