The Nevins Library is a collection point for new hats, gloves, socks and blankets that will all go to members of The Movement Family, a grassroots organization directly helping the adult homeless population in this area. We will take collections until Nov. 25, and bring them to their annual Thanksgiving Dinner. We will also have our Giving Tree to benefit homeless children served by Emmaus Inc. – find out more below!
Library hours
Please be aware that the library will be closed Monday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. On Wednesday, Nov. 27 the library will close at noon, reopening Saturday, Nov. 30 for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Puzzle Swap, Puzzle Race!
It’s time for our now-annual Jigsaw Puzzle Swap, available when the library is open Nov. 4-9! Bring in your used (but complete!) puzzles and pick up a new-to-you puzzle, just in time for the cooler months. Then, for the first time, the library will be hosting a Jigsaw Puzzle Race on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10am! Register your team of no more than 4 members, and race to see which team can complete a brand-new White Mountain Puzzle first! There will be a team made up of Library staff – can you beat them? History of Magic
Join us Thursday, Nov. 14 at 6pm to hear about the History of Magic with Chris Lengyl! At this event, we will learn about magic and how it has resonated in pop culture, different magicians from different time periods and see many different magic tricks performed throughout the program. Cybersecurity and You
We’ll be gaining a better understanding about how to stay safe online on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 6:30pm. Join us as we learn about creating strong passwords, using multifactor authentication, how to defend against phishing attacks and more. Virtual Programs
We’ve got two great virtual programs for you this month! First, on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10am, join us online to learn about How to Survive in Tudor England. Author and historian Toni Mount will virtually discuss how it was done and what we would need to do if time travel ever became a thing and we had an opportunity to travel back to the time of the Tudors. Then, on Monday, Nov. 25 at 7pm, professor, historian and author Kathleen DuVal will discuss her book, “Native Nations: A Millennium in North America.” The book places the power of Native nations at its center, from the rise of ancient cities more than 1,000 years ago to fights for sovereignty that continue today. Registration for both of these programs is through our Calendar of Events, which will then send you a link to participate in the program.
Holiday Kick-Off Concert
The Nevins Library is happy to bring Dan Kennedy back for another Holiday Kick-Off Concert on Sunday, Dec. 1 at 3pm. Join us for an afternoon of music and merriment as he plays piano versions of popular holiday favorites as well as a few classically tinged compositions of his own. An artist meet-and-greet will follow, and his CD “An Enchanted Noël,” will be available for purchase. New board-game event for adults
If you are in your 20s or 30s, love coffee, tea and games, come to Board and Brewed on Saturday, Nov. 9 and 30 at 11am. The library will provide coffee and tea; you provide the games. Come ready to meet people and have fun!

Youth Services News
Now that the spooky fun of October is gone by, we look ahead to a busy November – even with several holiday closures for Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, we’re chock-full of great programs this month. We’ll be offering our usual array of storytimes, book groups, history and craft programs, and baby/toddler programs, of course, but we’d especially like to draw your attention to a parent workshop on identifying and coping with children’s anxiety (for parents of children 2-12). Led by Ashley Abesamra, a Licensed Mental Health Clinician, this discussion will help parents acquire tools to help them navigate these challenges with their child. Originally scheduled for October, the program has been rescheduled as a Zoom meeting to give more parents access to this helpful topic.
November also leads into a lot of holiday activity, of course, including our yearly tradition of sponsoring a gift drive to benefit homeless children in the Merrimack Valley who are served by Emmaus Inc. Did you know that the average age of a homeless person in Massachusetts is 8 years old? Through its shelters and housing programs, Emmaus has served thousands of children since 1985, and on any given night 300 adults and children call Emmaus home. Please help ensure that these children have a happy holiday by donating gifts through our Giving Tree – last year our wonderful patrons were able to meet every child’s wish, and we hope to match that success this year! If you’d like to help, just drop by the Children’s Room between Nov. 22 and Dec. 12, choose a Wish List item to purchase, and put it unwrapped under our tree by Dec. 13. Thank you!
