The Methuen Police Department is putting out an All-Point Bulletin for folks willing to jump into a chilly 4-feet-deep swimming pool to raise money for Special Olympics athletes.
“You can do cannonballs or just walk in,” explained Police Officer Brandon Laflamme. “People are encouraged to dress up in costume. You can make it a REALLY fun event if you wanted to!”
The Methuen Mobile Plunge takes place at Nicholson Stadium on Jan. 20, which is the Martin Luther King Day holiday. Check-in is at 10am, with the plunge starting at 11am. Police are holding the event in coordination with the Methuen Recreation Department.
“It’s a safe event. All ages can do it,” Laflamme said. “It’s a cool thing for a family!”
Teams can consist of everyone from family, friends and club members to businesses, neighbors, etc. Participants raise money on their own, and everyone who brings donations gets to jump into the 8-by-10-foot pool. Participants can change in the locker rooms at the stadium; bathrooms at the nearby Timony School will also be open.
“We talked to one of (Special Olympics’) reps at the Tip a Cop at Texas Road House and she told us about this event. We thought we’d try to do a citywide fund-raiser and have a good time with it,” Laflamme explained.
All proceeds benefit Special Olympics athletes. To register, visit the Methuen Police Department Facebook page for the link or to scan the QR code there. Those spontaneous types can even sign up that day.
