Timony School students have 300 new reading-for-pleasure books to choose from, thanks to First Church Congregational!
For the past three years, the church’s Outreach Ministry Team has held a book drive for one of Methuen’s grammar schools. The first year it was for the Tenney Grammar School, the second year for the CGS, and this year for the Timony.
Parishioners were asked to donate new or gently used books for those in kindergarten to grade eight, and were given a list of recommended authors and sources for obtaining the books. Popular children’s writers including Tedd Arnold, Beverly Cleary, Roald Dahl, Jeff Kinney and Mo Willems all made the list, with the goal of promoting literacy and helping kids achieve grade-level reading skills.
On Oct. 17, book drive co-leaders Cynthia Causbie and Jo Crosby arrived at the Timony with their HUGE delivery! They were greeted by Supervising Principal Christopher Reeve, Humanities Supervisor Shannon Gilligan, and third-grade teacher Julia Barry and her students.
Cynthia and Jo said they had fun watching the kids open the boxes and look through the books! Each child also received a bookmark.
The church is looking forward to rounding up books for the Marsh School next year!
