For the parents of bleary-eyed, gadget-happy kids, there’s good news and then a dash of better news.

Brendon Medugno’s Youth Summer Series camps for young athletes and non-athletes have two rules that get your attention:

1. No screens for campers.

2. No screens for staff.

Screens as in cell phones, tablets, etc.

The Methuen High School Class of 2002 wrestling and football standout and his staff are here to combine training with fun again this summer. Brendon opened the Haus of Athletes gym on Lowell Street in 2021.

“We started with 12 kids in 2017 on a little strip of turf in the corner,” said Brendon of the early camps. “But you’d be amazed at what we could do in that strip. I’ve been living in Methuen most of my life and in the summertime there wasn’t a lot to do. We didn’t have a community center like my cousins in North Andover.”

Despite COVID, Brendon launched summer camps in 2020 that featured activities like a Slip ‘n Slide and variations of flag football and kickball.

“Now we’re up to 450 athletes, between my basketball academy and football academy,” Brendon said. “We have a lot of non-athletes, too, and we take the kids on field trips to the Fischer Cats, Bear Brook State Park’s beach and to a roller-skating rink.”

This summer, campers will be transported to the World of Wizardry in Salem, Mass.

Held at the Greater Lawrence Technical School this summer, the camps are designed to improve boys’ and girls’ skills and techniques, as well expose them to fun field-trip destinations in the Merrimack Valley.

“Where we really strive is 3 years to 12 years. You don’t make it to the next level until your form is impeccable,” said Brendon.

This summer, each Friday for eight weeks, the Haus of Athletes will team up with the Greater Lawrence Technical School shop teachers to teach new skills including automotive technology, cosmetology, plumbing, carpentry and culinary.

“The last three years have been amazing,” said Brendon.
