Jane Healey
Local favorite Jane Healey will be here Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7pm to share her new book “The Women of Arlington Hall.” This book is a story about a female codebreaker who puts her future and her heart on the line in a stirring novel about love, loyalty, betrayal and Cold War Spy Games. Flamenco Dance
Workshops
We’re wrapping up Hispanic Heritage Month with two Flamenco Dance Workshops! Both will be Thursday, Oct. 16; the workshop for kids (age 8 and up) is at 5pm, and the workshop for adults is at 6:30pm. Yu-Ling Hu of Heart.Dance.Space (https://heartdancespace.com/) will introduce us to the world of flamenco dancing, the values and the beauty of cultural dance, and the importance of individuality expressed through dance and movements. Haunted Castles
of New England
Join us Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7pm for this ghostly talk! New England is home to several haunted castles brimming with alleged paranormal activity, each with its own unique history and lore. Using careful research and firsthand accounts, author Sam Baltrusis delves into the history and mystery associated with some of New England’s most haunted castles. Craft Swap
Saturday, Nov. 1 from 10am-noon, we will be hosting a Community Craft Swap. Do you have craft supplies you no longer need? Want to start a new hobby without investing money? Come by our Community Art Supply Swap and exchange items for something new to try. Pass along supplies, grab some for free and keep them out of the landfill! the Library
Thanks to everyone who supported our Book Sale last month! It was quite successful and will help the Friends continue to support Library services and programs. Your next chance to help the Friends is Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Irish Cottage between 4 and 10pm! Enjoy a great meal and bring a flyer – as each flyer is worth an extra $1 donation to the Friends group. Best part – you can eat in or take out and still support the Friends!

• Wednesday, Oct. 1, 4pm – Book Babble. This month we’re discussing “Darius the Great is Not Okay” by Adib Khorram in which clinically depressed Darius Kellner travels to Iran to meet his grandparents but it is their next-door neighbor, Sohrab, who changes his life.
• Thursday, Oct. 2, 4pm – Anime Club for fans of anime, or those who are curious about it.
• Wednesday, Oct. 8, 4pm – Arts & Crafts Club where you can create your own art or take home a craft.
• Thursday, Oct. 9, 4pm – Gaming Club. Come learn some new board and card games, play a familiar favorite, or play the Nintendo Switch.
• Wednesday, Oct. 15, 4pm – Movie Club. Come to watch and talk about movies. Members choose the movie during the meeting.

Children’s Room
We’re settling into our school-year routine now, enjoying our variety of storytimes and programs for kids of all ages, but we also have some special programs to offer this month. For example, we’ll be hosting a Flamenco Dance Workshop, two parent workshops (on childhood anxiety and on pre-teen emotions), and another Star Wars event where kids and teens can learn how to handle a lightsaber and also meet some of their favorite characters. And don’t miss our offsite bilingual program at the Methuen Music Hall, where stories by Mo Willems will be read aloud and set to music – sure to be an innovative way to enjoy Willem’s popular work!
We’re also introducing a number of new programs this month: French/English Bilingual Storytime, Adaptive Storytime, Read & Play, Craft of the Month, Story Solvers and Make Your Own Zine! (Please see our calendar for descriptions and registration for these fun new offerings.) And Alphabits and Donuts with Grown-Ups are back this month!
October brings special Halloween programs, as well! Once again this year we’ll have a Haunted Woods event, where kids can take a tour through our spooky woods and enjoy Halloween games and crafts. (Some parts of the program will be scarier than others, for kids who enjoy different levels of spookiness.) And your littlest ones won’t want to miss our annual Halloween Happenings program – dress up your kids in their costumes, and bring them to the library for Halloween stories and trick-or-treating throughout the building!
Keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and Facebook page to check the dates for these programs and to learn the latest about upcoming programs, fund-raisers and special events – there’s always something interesting going on!
