The Nevins Library is happy to welcome back best-selling author Michael Blanding on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 6:30pm. This time he will be discussing his new book, “The Gospel According to Hobby Lobby,” a revelatory account of how the family behind Hobby Lobby rose to political prominence and used their influence and fortune to push a radical religious agenda. Blanding is a Boston-based investigative journalist and author of “The Map Thief” and “North by Shakespeare.”

Mastering Stress
Whether you’re navigating everyday pressures or long-term challenges, learning how to manage stress can improve both your mental and physical well-being. Join us Thursday, Aug. 13 at 6:30pm for this interactive workshop, “Mastering Stress: Practical Techniques for Relief,” with Lauren Masse, the founder of Bright Heart Coaching LLC. Participants will learn how stress affects the mind and body, recognize common stressors and explore practical, evidence-informed strategies for managing stress in everyday life. Through relatable education and simple, actionable techniques, attendees will leave feeling more empowered, resilient and equipped with tools they can begin using right away. Farmers Market
We hope you’ve had a chance to check out the Farmers Market on our front lawn this year! If not, don’t worry. It’s happening every Friday from 10am-4pm through the end of October. All the farmers accept SNAP EBT/food stamps, debit, credit and cash. GWL (Groundwork Lawrence) Market coupons, WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) and Senior farmers market coupons are also welcome. The sarket is here, rain or shine.
Teen Program:
Reverse Tie-Dye
Come to Reverse Tie-Dye on Friday, Aug. 7 at 10am. Using upcycled fabric destined for the landfill and hand-cut stencils, we will create “reverse tie-dye” scarves. Dress for mess! Friends of the
Library meeting
The next meeting of the Friends of the Nevins Library will be Monday, Aug. 3 at 6:30pm at the library. This is a pivotal time for the Friends organization, and anyone interested in getting involved and perhaps even joining the Executive Board is encouraged to attend.
Children’s Room
July was a busy month, packed full of fantastic programs – and we have more in store for August! We’re excited to welcome Curious Creatures to the library to present an educational interactive animal program – kids could meet a baby gator, snake, tortoise, chinchilla, bunny, bearded dragon and more!
Other special programs cover quite a range of topics, including needle felting, tie-dye and mosaic art, as well as a Jackbox game session; and we’ll be offering the last of our summer programs series such as Summer Science, Jory Stories, Andy Reads and Outdoor Fun. Last but not least, don’t miss our final “Little Bookworms” programs at the Nevins Farm MSPCA on Aug. 7 – a wonderful collaboration where kids listen to stories and meet friendly animals who live at the farm.
As the summer winds down and we wrap up our special summer programming, we’d like to celebrate with our young patrons – so be sure to bring your kids to our End-of-Summer Carnival featuring games, contests, treats, and loads of fun. And if you have a child entering kindergarten in September, you won’t want to miss our Kickoff to Kindergarten community fair, which helps children and their families prepare for starting off in the Methuen Public Schools: Hear a story, meet the superintendent, learn about local agencies and organizations, and more! As of this writing, the date is still being finalized. Please check our online Calendar of Events for more information about this event, or call the Youth Services desk at (978) 686-4080 ext. 26.
Also, this month kids can still bring in summer reading tracking sheets to collect beads and enter the end-of summer raffle (the last day to enter the raffle is Aug. 15, but kids can collect beads up until the first day of school). And as usual, we’ll be presenting lots of our regular programs and storytimes (including a visit from Murphy the Dog, of course); just keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and Facebook page to learn the latest about upcoming events – we’d love to have you join us!
