As part of America’s 250th Birthday celebration, the TED organization and Visit Philadelphia is presenting a special day of TED talks titled “TED Democracy: Founding Futures” and the Nevins Library is one of only two libraries in Massachusetts selected to live stream the event! It all takes place Saturday, June 13 when over 15 original TED talks will be given focusing on the past, present and future of democracy. The speakers will be grouped into three sessions throughout the day. The speaker schedule has not been released as of this printing, but you can expect to hear from people like author Xochitl Gonzalez, library advocate Shamichael Hallman and television commentator Sally Kohn among others. Join us online Monday, June 15 at 7pm to meet author Rachel Hartigan as she discusses her new book “Lost: Amelia Earhart’s Three Mysterious Deaths and One Extraordinary Life.” Unravel one of history’s greatest mysteries in this spellbinding narrative, exploring three leading theories of Earhart’s tragic disappearance. We’re sure we all have our ideas on what could have happened to her, so we hope you’ll join us for this fascinating conversation! Small bees,
big Impact

Join us Tuesday, June 16 at 7pm when Kathy Balestrier will explore the honey bee’s life inside the hive and out in the field. This engaging and image-rich presentation will dive into the remarkable roles of the queen, worker and drone bees, as well as the ingenious ways bees share information, find food and keep a colony thriving. You will also learn how bees create honey and wax, why pollination matters to gardens and agriculture, and what everyone can do to support pollinators at home. Participants will also have the opportunity to taste raw local honey that was harvested in the spring, summer and fall. Library hours

We are getting ready to transition to summer hours, which means that Saturday, June 13 will be the last Saturday we are open 9am-5pm until fall. Beginning Saturday, June 27 we will be open 9am-1pm on Saturdays. Please also note that the library will be closed Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 for the Juneteenth holiday.

The Friends of the Nevins Library has two delicious opportunities to support their mission in June.
First, dine at the Chateau in Andover on Tuesday, June 16 and let them know you are there to support the Friends – and they will donate 20% of your bill back to the Friends to support library programming.
Then, the Friends will hold the always popular Chill Out! on Thursday, June 25 from 4-8pm. At this event in the Garden Room is set to help celebrate the kick-off of summer programming at the library. Come in and purchase an ice cream sundae for only $5 – all the toppings are included. All money raised goes directly to help support the Friends and their work.

For teens

Summer reading is here! This year’s summer reading theme is “Plant a Seed, Read.” Come to the library to pick up your reading log, for a chance to win prizes! Come pick up your summer reading books at the library as well!
We have exciting programs this summer! Kick off summer with a Silent Disco! At a silent disco, you get to pick what music you listen to and, using wireless headphones, choose between three playlists and dance the night away! We’ll provide headphones that allow you to switch between the playlists. Silent Disco is happening Thursday, June 25 at 6:30pm.
Join us for Teen Paint & Journaling on Monday, June 29 at 5:30pm. Join us for a night of art-making paired with reflective or creative writing with Tia’s Art Studio. This event will blend literacy through journaling, and step-by-step painting instructions. Come to express yourself through art and writing!

Children’s Room

We are so excited that it’s time to launch another season of wonderful summer programs and activities! Before we begin telling you about the many goings-on in June, though, we have to give you a heads-up about an amazing event in July: famous author and illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka — whose wildly popular books include the Lunch Lady series, Jedi Academy adventures, “Punk Farm,” “Peanut Butter & Jellyfish,” the memoir “Hey, Kiddo,” and more — will be paying us a fun, fantastic visit to talk about his art and writing on July 21! Registration opens June 15 — mark your calendars so that you’ll remember to sign up for this very, very, very special program!
Until then, come enjoy our June offerings! Our official summer kickoff event is the return of the ever-popular Silent Disco, but you’ll also find lots of other special events this month, such as Family Board Game Afternoon, a storytime with Andy the Armadillo (the Texas Roadhouse mascot), Family Game Show Night, Jory Stories (featuring Jory John’s popular picture books), Kids’ Board Game Afternoon, a Baby Rave dance party, and Family Paint Night. Plus, we’ll have a special edition of LEGO Block Party: the Nevins is one of four public libraries in the state selected to help create an American flag made of LEGOS — to be displayed on the Esplanade during the famous BSO July 4th concert! Come help build our portion and be part of an incredible celebration!
In June we also welcome the return of our weekly Little Bookworms storytimes at the MSPA at Nevins Farm on Friday mornings (beginning June 26), where kids listen to stories and then get to meet an animal who lives at the farm. As ever, we’ll also have our usual array of infant and preschool programs, storytimes, and fun teen programs, and Murphy the Dog will visit, too.
Last but not least, the Summer Reading season will start soon: beginning June 22, kids entering kindergarten and above can come to the Youth Services department to collect their summer swag bag and start tracking their summer reading (and little ones can start, or keep working on, their 1000 Book Before Kindergarten goal). Participants will get beads and brag tags to mark their progress, and every 140 minutes of reading earns an entry into our end-of-summer prize drawing. At this time, registration is open for June programs, but of course we’ll be offering more great events throughout the summer; keep your eye on our calendar and Facebook as we post July programs (registration opens June 15) and August programs (registration opens July 15) – there’s so much fun in store!
