The Nevins Library is pleased to roll out our new initiative, letting everyone know that You Belong Here! This is not a change in our philosophy, but more that we’re saying the quiet part out loud: Nevins Library strives to be an inclusive environment – helping our community connect, grow and learn. We work to make sure the library is accessible to all cultures, backgrounds and abilities. If you haven’t been by recently, please stop in and see what we have available for you – no matter if it is a book in another language, games to help reach a loved one living with dementia or a program exploring foods from different parts of the world – we can help you. And while you’re here – pick up one of our new bookmarks, featuring some of our Methuen community members!

We have THREE opportunities for you to enjoy a free concert at the library in May! Come to one, come to them all – just make sure you register to save your seat!
• Tuesday, May 5 at 7pm: V is the Valley – A Concert and Conversation with Jack DesBois. At this concert, singer-storyteller Jack DesBois will breathe new life into the old folk songs of the Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection – sharing the songs in all their delight, horror, humor and gravity.
• Tuesday, May 26 at 6:30pm: Polaris Flutes. This flute ensemble’s repertoire includes original compositions and transcriptions written for a combination of instruments in the flute family, from the piccolo down to the concert flute, alto and bass flutes.
• Sunday, May 31 at 1pm: New England Ukulele String Ensemble. This popular group is coming back for a Sunday afternoon “Coffee House Concert” that will be great fun and easy listening for everyone.

Cheryl Bradley
Join us Thursday, May 14 at 6:30pm as we welcome local author and spiritual medium, Cheryl Bradley, for a heartfelt introduction to her book, “A Spirit’s Journey,” which debuted as a #1 New Release on Amazon. Through a warm and engaging talk, Cheryl explores the soul’s path — from the peace of the Other Side, through the choices made before birth, into the human experience and, ultimately, the return home. Blending themes of soul planning, intuition and the deeper meaning behind life’s relationships and challenges, this program offers a thoughtful and accessible look at the idea that our lives may be part of a greater unfolding guided by purpose. Friends of the
Library meeting
Join the Friends of the Library at their next monthly meeting on Monday, May 4 at 6:30pm in the Garden Room of the library. Learn about what’s coming up next, and how you can help! The Friends are also looking for volunteers for board positions. Could you be the next president or secretary of the Friends group?
Events for teens
May is the last month for teen after-school programs as we’ll begin our summer programs in June.
• Book Babble: Wednesday, May 6 at 4pm. This month we’re talking about “Tress of the Emerald Sea” by Brandon Sanderson. The only life Tress has known on her island home in an emerald-green ocean has been a simple one, with the simple pleasures of collecting cups brought by sailors from faraway lands and listening to stories told by her friend Charlie. But when his father takes him on a voyage to find a bride and disaster strikes, Tress must stow away on a ship and seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. Amid the spore oceans where pirates abound, can Tress leave her simple life behind and make her own place sailing a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death? The library will be closed Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day.
Friends’ fund-raiser
Support the Friends by not cooking dinner – have Papa Gino’s at 782 River St., Haverhill take care of you Tuesday, May 12 between 4 and 9pm and a portion of your bill will be donated to the Friends of the Nevins Library. It’s a win-win!

Children’s Room
Spring is in full swing, but here in the Youth Services Department we’re gearing up for summer! We have lots of great programs in store for our young patrons during the summer and, as usual, you can start registering for June events on May 15.
Meanwhile, throughout May we’ll also have our usual variety of preschool programs, storytimes, book groups, teen programs and two visits from Murphy the Dog! Keep an eye on the Youth Services Department calendar and Facebook page to keep track of what’s in store, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
