The Greater Lawrence Technical School SkillsUSA chapter had 11 students, including a gold-medal state champ from Methuen, earn recognition at the annual SkillsUSA Massachusetts State Leadership and Skills Conference held May 1-3 in Marlborough.
The event, which is the state’s largest celebration of career and technical education, brought together over 2,500 students, educators and industry leaders, showcasing excellence in skilled trades and leadership. The conference featured a wide range of activities, including opening and closing ceremonies, leadership workshops, and the SkillsUSA Championships. In the championships, students participated in hands-on competitions that tested both technical expertise and leadership skills across multiple career pathways.
Among the 11 GLTS students earning placements in the competition were these Methuen students:
*Julissa Sanchez was crowned State Champion in Medical Assisting. Last year, as a junior, she placed second and advanced to state level. Her passion for the medical field began even before she attended GLTS, inspired by her grandmother’s struggle with diabetes. Her gold medal qualifies her to represent Massachusetts as the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in Atlanta from June 23-27 where she’ll compete against the best Medical Assisting students from across the country.
*Thomas Kotas and Nicholas Marshall were part of a quartet that won bronze medals for the Teamwork Team.
*Yolyana Baez earned bronze for the Career Pathways Showcase: Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources.
