MPD remembers the fallen, looks to future with promotions

May 15-25 marked Police Memorial Week throughout the country. Police departments held ceremonies to honor officers taken in the line of duty as well as their departed members.
Methuen Police Department held their ceremony honoring their own. Lt. James Gunter gave a statement honoring officers who perished in the line of duty: Officer Roland Kinlock, 1974; Patrolman Walter Hurd, 1966; Patrolman Arthur Bower, 1923; and Patrolmen Francis McDermott and Charles Emerson, both 1908.
The Rev. Nathaniel Burnes of First Baptist Church led a prayer service for the department, offering blessings to the officers. Retired Officer Donald Privitera read the names of all the departed members of the department. A gun salute from the Honor Guard followed.
Police Chief Scott McNamara then announced the newest promotions within the department:
*James Moore, a 31-year veteran of the department, was promoted to captain. He was pinned by his wife Tricia with a badge that belonged to her father, retired Capt. Ed Guy.
*Shawn Moore, a 29-year veteran of the department and James’ twin, was promoted to lieutenant. He was pinned by his father-in-law, Ron Small.
*Matthew Tarness, a 20-year veteran of the department, was promoted to sergeant and pinned by his wife Melissa.
