Due to popular demand, we are hosting another Jigsaw Puzzle Swap! This swap will take place during the library’s regular business hours, June 2-7. Bring in the jigsaw puzzles you’ve completed, and take home new-to-you jigsaw puzzles. Please make sure that the boxes you bring are complete, and that either the box is taped or the pieces are in a Ziploc bag. Happy puzzling!

Lafayette Day
This year, Saturday, June 21 marks the 200th anniversary of the Marquis de Lafayette’s visit to Methuen! Be on the lookout for special events, speakers and activities happening on the library grounds to commemorate this special occasion.

New museum pass
Nevins Library now has a discount pass to America’s Stonehenge and The Aviation Museum of New Hampshire! We also have the Boston Harbor Island Ferry Pass back for the summer. These passes offer steep discounts for admission, and usually for multiple people. This is in addition to all the other passes we have for you to use. We have one pass per place per day, so be sure to reserve passes in advance through our website (nevinslibrary.com) or by calling (978) 686-4080. We thank the Friends of the Nevins Library for making these passes available.
Summer hours
June means that the library will go into our “summer hours” schedule. Starting June 14, the library will be open 9am-1pm on Saturdays until September (except holiday weekends). Additionally, the library will be closed Friday, June 13 for a Staff Development Day as well as Thursday, June 19 for the Juneteenth holiday.

Papa Gino’s fund-raiser
The Friends of the Library are hosting a yummy fund-raiser at Papa Ginos, 782 River St., Haverhill on Tuesday, June 24, 4-9pm. The restaurant will donate a portion of your check if you let them know that you are there for the fund-raiser when you order. It’s so simple!
Empowering Caregivers
Caregivers of pre-teens are invited to attend Empowering Caregivers: Supporting your Pre-teen through Big Emotions on Thursday, June 12, 7-8pm. This in-person workshop will be led by Licensed Mental Health Counselor Ashley Abesamra. In this workshop, you will learn how to identify typical pre-teen behavior vs. when additional support may be helpful, tools for supporting your pre-teen with emotional regulation, tools to help you keep calm while helping your pre-teen with big emotions and how to create your own support plan to help you attend to your self-care. Space is limited for this workshop, so please sign up using the Calendar of Events on our website or by calling (978) 686-4080 ext. 26.

Calling teens!
Summer is here at the Nevins! This year’s summer reading theme is Level Up at Your Library. Kick off summer programs with Family Movie Day on Monday, June 30, 4-6pm. Come enjoy a movie for the whole family. Space for this event is limited, so please be sure to sign up using the Calendar of Events or by calling (978) 686-4080. Also, track your summer reading and earn points for your efforts on the ReadSquared app. Earn one point for every minute you read. Read for 140 minutes (20 minutes a day for 1 week), and you can earn a raffle ticket to enter to win one of our summer reading prizes.

From the Children’s Room
We are so excited that it’s time to launch another season of wonderful summer programs and activities! In June you can look forward to new summer programs (“Tales for 2s,” “Story & Craft,” “Outside Art,” “Summer Science,” “Read & Play” and the return of “History Unlocked”), as well special events to start the summer fun. For example, you won’t want to miss the return of the incredibly popular “Dinosaurs Rock!” interactive program, where kids can see real fossilized dinosaur skulls, footprints, claws, eggs and poop, and even take home their very own dinosaur fossil or crystal! (This program is funded by The Methuen Cultural Council, a local agency that is supported by the Mass Cultural Council). And if you’d like to spend time with live animals, come to “Animal Adventures,” a fun and unique learning experience for animal lovers; our presenters will introduce a variety of creatures to the audience, including interesting information and stories and the opportunity to pet some of them!
We also welcome the return of our weekly Little Bookworms storytimes at the MSPA at Nevins Farm on Friday mornings (beginning June 20), where kids listen to stories and then get to meet an animal who lives at the farm.
Of course, the Summer Reading season will begin soon, and we have a fresh take on tracking kids’ reading progress: in keeping with this summer’s theme of “Level Up at Your Library.” We’ll give kids a “game board” to stamp as they read in 20-minute increments, which will also allow them to enter our raffle for end-of-summer prizes! (They can also use the ReadSquared app to track their reading.) Beginning June 16, kids entering kindergarten and above can come to the Youth Services Department to collect their summer swag bag and start tracking their summer reading (and little ones can start, or keep working on, their 1000 Book Before Kindergarten goal). We’ll also be screening a fun “(video)gaming” movie, to celebrate the summer game theme.
As ever, we’ll also have our usual array of infant and preschool programs, storytimes and fun teen programs, and Murphy the Dog will be here regularly throughout the summer. At this time, registration is open for June programs, but of course we’ll be offering more great events throughout the summer; keep your eye on our calendar and Facebook as we post July programs (registration opens June 15) and August programs (registration opens July 15) – there’s so much fun in store!
Happy June, and Happy Reading!
