The Happy Hearts Chorus celebrated its 40th year with a concert that spanned songs of the decades! It was held at the Methuen Senior Activity Center before an audience of over 100 spectators.

Jeannette Courtemanche was the original director of the Happy Hearts drama group and clown troupe. While members enjoyed the drama aspect, they soon realized that they loved singing much more.

Susan Riccio took over the chorus as director in 1999. At one point, it included 52 members. Today they are a group 40-strong and Riccio remains at the helm. 

She said the Happy Hearts Chorus enjoys “singing their hearts out” at the center, in nursing homes and veterans’ homes, and across the city during events at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall, Methuen Day and Christmastime, adding, “The group doesn’t disappoint!”

They’re an energetic and vibrant troupe, never shying away from bold solos or entertaining costumes.

The 40th anniversary show was dedicated in loving memory of Mayor Neil Perry, who died Sept. 21. He strongly supported Methuen’s seniors and enjoyed time spent at the center, occasionally singing at Happy Hearts shows.

Acting Mayor Beauregard spoke briefly, saying the recent days had been difficult as the city collectively mourned.

“Today we are coming together for a positive event and for bringing joy to Methuen, and I can’t wait to hear the wonderful music you have for us,” he said.

Methuen Senior Center Director Ashley Shaheen thanked Riccio for putting together the anniversary event and told the large crowd, “For four decades, our center has been the cornerstone of the community, a true home-away-from-home, where friendships flourish and connections thrive. It is because of each of you that we continue to grow, evolve and expand our programs and services. We look forward to many more years of shared experiences.”
